June 23rd - Cheese Day & Hiking in Hasliberg

Cheese Day was one of the excursions arranged by Untour representatives. We took the early gondolas up to Magisalp at an altitude of 5,600 ft. where a farmer and his wife showed us the process of making cheese.

Here is a photo of some of the people who were on Untour vacations in the area. There were families of four or five as well as couples. Some grandparents who had been on Untours for more than ten years had brought their grandchildren along.

The farmer and his wife had been up at 4:00am to begin to heat the milk and start the cheese making process. It was hard, hot work!!

After the curds had been strained out of the vats, the whey was pumped into another part of the barn to feed the pigs. The farmer then let the cows out of the barn and they wandered among Untour visitors. They were very gentle as Susan can attest.

The cheese making exhibition was over about 10am. We then began to hike across the Hasliberg trails. We hiked for about one and a half hours to the gondola at Kaiserstatt which we took down to the village of Hasliberg Wassenwendi.

At Kaiserstatt, we had the option of renting a "Monster-Trotti" (a large tired scooter with brakes) and coasting down to Lischen over alpine meadows, rocks and boulders. We declined. We were told that all water in Switzerland is safe to drink unless marked as unsafe. We believed them. As you see by the signpost, we had many alternatives for hiking.

We hiked another hour across to Hohfluh where we caught the Post bus to Brunigpass. There we boarded the train back to Meiringen. It had been a wonderful day of hiking in what Untour calls the "Swiss Heartland".
