June 18th - Arriving in Meiringen

We landed in Zurich to begin our two weeks of an "Untour" in Switzerland. Untour provides airline connections, apartments, and a Swiss rail pass, as well as lots of help. Then they let you do your own thing. We had booked one week in Meiringen and one week in Locarno. We were met at the Zurich airport by an Untour representative who then guided 17 of us onto the train bound for towns between Luzern and Meiringen. We were the last ones to get off at the end of the line in Meiringen.

Frau Erika met us at the Meiringen railroad station with her cart to carry our luggage to her Chalet. The apartment was on the ground floor and was very well equipped. We had all we needed to cook all of our meals but Susan said, "This is my vacation. We're going out for dinner." We found good food at different restaurants each of our 7 days in Meiringen.

Meiringen is a clean, typical Swiss town. It is located on the southern end of the delta of the Aare River that flows down from the mountains into Lake Brienz. It is a transportation hub with trains running frequently between Luzern and Interlaken and buses running into the mountains in various directions.

Meiringen has a lot of attractions. It is famous for the "meringue" which was created here for the first time in about 1600. Nearby is the spectacular Aareschlucht (Aare Gorge) which was carved by glaciers and water through a limestone ridge. And the nearby Reichenbach Falls is where Sherlock Holmes met a premature demise.

The town sits between cliffs on both sides. Our hikes took us up into the alps of the Hasliberg region to the east and into the Rosenlaui Valley to the west. We could see the Rosenlaui Glacier from our apartment. We were delighted that we had picked Meiringen as the location of the first week of our Untour.
